The Society of the Fifth Division, United States Army was created by the World War I veterans of the Fifth Division at the Fifth Division Headquarters in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg, on the eleventh and thirteenth of June 1919. It had some 18,000 members on its early membership roster. It is the oldest United States military unit organization with a continued existence from its beginnings to present day.

The Objectives of the Society of the Fifth Division, U.S. Army are:
A.
To perpetuate and memorialize the valiant acts and patriotic deeds of the Fifth Division; to electrify and unify that invisible current of fellowship, friendship and comradeship molded in the throes of war and the exigencies of a peacetime service, and promote the interests and welfare of its members.
B. To publish and preserve the history of the accomplishments of the Fifth Division and the Society, in war and peace, and set forth the gallant and heroic deeds of its members.

Symbolism: The red diamond originated as a color marking of the Division transport and equipment during World War I. Red was selected as a compliment to the commanding general of the division in France whose branch of service was artillery. The "ace of diamonds" was selected from the trade name "Diamond dye - it never runs." The red diamond represents a well-known problem in bridge building; it is made up of two adjacent isosceles triangles that make for the greatest strength. The division's nickname is "Red Diamond." The soldiers of the Red Diamond Division were called "Red Devils" by their German enemy in WW-I, for their fighting tenacity, and this has remained their nickname to present day.

Shoulder Sleeve Insignia Description: A Red Diamond [a rhombus] with vertical axis 2-1/2 inches and horizontal axis 1-1/2 inches.
